Why SolarEdge Power Optimisers Outperform a Standard Inverter

SolarEdge is one of the world's most recognised names in solar energy technology, founded in 2006 and now installed across more than 100 countries worldwide. Unlike traditional string inverters, SolarEdge pioneered the DC-optimised inverter system - pairing a central inverter with individual power optimisers fitted to every panel. The result is a solar system that maximises output from each panel independently, so shading, dirt, or a poorly angled panel on one part of your roof never drags down the performance of the whole system.

Tile Energy are proud to be certified SolarEdge Trusted Installers. Our accredited engineers install, configure and commission SolarEdge systems to the full manufacturer specification - and register your warranty directly with SolarEdge on your behalf. SolarEdge& Our Choice
Shading Protection
SolarEdge fits a power optimiser to every individual panel. Each panel works independently, so shading from a chimney, dormer or tree never pulls down the rest of your system.
Panel-Level Monitoring
The free mySolarEdge app gives you live output data for every individual panel. Our team can also run remote diagnostics and in many cases resolve issues without a site visit.
Roof Safety (SafeDC)
SolarEdge's SafeDC automatically reduces all DC cable voltage to a safe 1V the moment the system is switched off. Preferred by leading UK insurance companies and fire services.
Works With High-Wattage Panels (400W+)
Most microinverters have a power cap of around 380W. Modern panels regularly produce 400W or more. SolarEdge optimisers pass the full DC output to the central inverter with no cap, so your panels are never held back.
Battery Storage Integration
SolarEdge integrates directly and efficiently with Tesla Powerwall and SolarEdge Home Battery. Microinverters are AC-coupled only, which is a less efficient and more complex path to battery storage.
Fault Repair & Servicing Access
If a microinverter fails, replacing it means scaffold and roof access. SolarEdge's central inverter is wall-mounted. Easy for our team to access, diagnose, and replace without going on your roof.
Monitoring System Reliability
Microinverter systems require a separate gateway hub to communicate data. That hub typically carries only a 5-year warranty. SolarEdge monitoring is built directly into the central inverter - no additional component to fail.
System Failure Risk
In fairness, a microinverter fault only affects one panel. A SolarEdge central inverter failure stops the system until replaced - though it is wall-mounted and straightforward to swap. SolarEdge optimiser failures are isolated per panel.
Inverter Warranty
String inverters typically carry only 5-12 years and will need replacing during your panel lifetime. SolarEdge inverters come with 12 years as standard, extendable to 20 or 25 years. Optimisers carry 25 years as standard.
UK Cost (vs basic string inverter)
Microinverters are the most expensive option - typically £600 to £1,100 more than a basic string inverter on a 4kW system. SolarEdge costs £300 to £600 more than a basic string - delivering the same shading performance and monitoring at a noticeably lower premium.
The Verdict
Best for simple, unshaded south-facing roofs on a tight budget. Will need replacing during panel lifetime.
Genuine advantages for heavily shaded or very complex roofs. But the most expensive option, with servicing and battery integration challenges.
Best all-round for most UK homes.
SolarEdge delivers the same core shading and monitoring benefits as microinverters - but with better battery integration, simpler servicing, no gateway dependency, and no panel output cap. At a lower cost than microinverters and backed by an industry-leading warranty.

String Inverter vs Microinverter vs SolarEdge: Which is Right for Your Home?

Most homeowners are only shown one option when they get a solar quote. Here is an honest comparison of the three main inverter technologies available in the UK, so you can make an informed decision.

Read Video Transcript

Going solar is an important decision and one that requires research. Today we'll explain how your solar panels work with three different solar technologies - string inverter systems, microinverter systems, and the SolarEdge DC optimised system.

First up, the string inverter system, where all the panels are connected in a string like a chain. If one panel underperforms due to shading or debris, the whole string's performance falls to the level of the lowest performing panel - reducing the output of your entire system.

Next, we have microinverter and DC optimised systems that use power optimisers. With these two technologies, each panel operates independently, like individual players. However, microinverters have certain limitations. Most panels today can produce more power than the strongest microinverter can handle, meaning your system cannot always reach its full potential.

With a SolarEdge DC optimised system that uses power optimisers, you can maximise the energy extracted from each panel - capturing every unit of energy your system produces. You'll get the maximum solar power from your panels, allowing you to harness more energy to power your home or store in your battery. With SolarEdge, you generate more energy and can use it in more places.

The SolarEdge System

Two Components. One Intelligent System.

Every SolarEdge installation uses two purpose-built pieces of hardware that work together. Here is what each one does and why both matter.

The Power Optimiser
Fitted to every panel on your roof

The power optimiser is a small DC-DC converter fitted to the underside of every panel during installation. It is the component that makes SolarEdge fundamentally different from a standard string inverter system.

  • Tracks each panel's maximum power point independently using MPPT
  • Uses Boost and Buck technology to condition DC output regardless of panel voltage
  • Communicates real-time performance data to the inverter via power line communication
  • Enables panel-level monitoring through the mySolarEdge app
  • Activates SafeDC - reducing panel voltage to 1V on shutdown
  • Compatible with panels of different types, angles and orientations on the same string

The HD-Wave Inverter
Wall-mounted inside or outside your property

The central inverter is wall-mounted, typically in your garage or utility room. It receives the conditioned DC power from all your optimisers and converts it to AC for use in your home, communicating with every optimiser on the roof throughout the day.

  • Converts DC power from optimisers into AC electricity for your home
  • HD-Wave technology delivers up to 99% conversion efficiency
  • Lighter and smaller than conventional inverters - fewer magnetic components
  • Built-in monitoring hub - no separate gateway device required
  • SafeDC controller - triggers 1V shutdown across all optimisers simultaneously
  • Compatible with SolarEdge Home Battery and Tesla Powerwall storage systems

KEY FEATURES OF THE SOLAREDGE INVERTER SYSTEM

Panel-Level Power Optimisation

Every panel on your roof gets its own power optimiser. Shading from a chimney, dormer window, or neighbouring tree no longer drags down the output of your entire system. Each panel works independently to produce the maximum possible energy from the sunlight it receives.

Up to 25% More Energy

Module-level optimisation typically delivers 20 to 25% more yield compared to a standard string inverter on the same roof. For homes with complex rooflines, multiple roof aspects, or any partial shading, this means faster payback and greater savings on your energy bills.

SafeDC Automatic Shutdown

DC voltage is automatically reduced to a safe level the moment the system is switched off or disconnected - whether that is a grid outage, emergency services attending a property, or routine maintenance. This safety feature is simply not available on standard string inverter systems.

Real-Time Panel Monitoring

The mySolarEdge app gives you a live view of exactly how each individual panel on your roof is performing. If a panel develops a fault or shading increases, you will know about it immediately. This level of detail is simply not available with a conventional string inverter.

Industry-Leading Warranty

SolarEdge inverters carry a 12-year product warranty as standard, extendable to 20 or 25 years. The power optimisers carry a 25-year warranty as standard - one of the longest in the industry. As a certified Trusted Installer, Tile Energy also provides a workmanship guarantee on every installation.
Boost & Buck Technology

Generating Power Earlier, Later and in Lower Light

A standard string inverter needs a minimum voltage across all panels before it will turn on. SolarEdge's Boost and Buck technology means your system starts generating before a standard inverter wakes up - and keeps going after it has stopped.

Standard String Inverter
Needs high voltage to start
A string inverter requires a minimum combined voltage across the whole string before it begins operating. In low light - early morning, late evening or overcast conditions - the threshold is not met and the inverter sits idle.
Generation through the day
6am 9am 12pm 3pm 6pm
Generation lost at start and end of day
SolarEdge with Power Optimisers
Starts generating in low light
Each optimiser tracks its own panel independently using Boost and Buck technology. The system starts generating earlier in the morning and keeps producing later into the evening - capturing energy that a standard inverter misses entirely.
Generation through the day
6am 9am 12pm 3pm 6pm
More energy captured across the full day
Boost
When a panel's voltage is too low - in early morning or overcast conditions - the optimiser boosts it to the required level. Your system generates power even when a standard inverter would be idle.
Buck
When a panel produces more voltage than the system needs, the optimiser bucks it down to the correct level. This protects the system and ensures consistent, efficient power conversion.
Per-Panel MPPT
Each optimiser continuously tracks its panel's maximum power point independently. Every panel is always operating at its individual peak - not dragged up or down by the panels around it.
Fixed String Voltage
The optimisers work together to maintain a fixed, stable voltage at the inverter input. This allows the inverter to operate at peak efficiency regardless of what individual panels are doing.

Three Reasons SolarEdge Outperforms a Standard Inverter

Most solar quotes include a standard string inverter. It costs less upfront - but it also produces less energy, offers less safety protection, and gives you no visibility of how your system is actually performing. Here is what you are paying for with SolarEdge.

When it comes to traditional string inverter PV systems, one rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel. By installing SolarEdge power optimisers, greater energy yield for the entire PV system is achieved.

The power optimiser is connected via cables to each module in the solar array, maximising energy production of each individual module by constantly tracking its maximum power point. The power optimiser reduces potential power losses due to soiling, shading, ageing, and current or future obstructions.

SolarEdge's unique design flexibility lets you install modules of multiple tilts, orientations and types in a single string, and even design strings of uneven lengths for easy module replacement or expansion.

With built-in SafeDC technology, maximum electrocution protection is provided for emergency first responders and installers if the grid or inverter shuts down. All power optimisers have a 25-year warranty, giving you full peace of mind.

You made a great decision going solar - now make it ideal with SolarEdge's power optimisers.

Standard Inverters Hold Back Your System. SolarEdge Does Not.

With a standard string inverter, all your panels are connected in series. The system only performs as well as the weakest panel. One shaded panel - from a chimney, a dormer window, or a tree - reduces the output of every panel on that string.

SolarEdge fits a power optimiser to every individual panel. Each panel works independently at its maximum output. The difference adds up to 20 to 25% more energy over the life of your system.

  • Panels on different roof angles can all be used
  • Shading never pulls down your whole system
  • Panels can be mixed and upgraded over time
  • More energy means faster payback on your investment

Installing and maintaining a PV system is generally a safe, secure process. But like the cars we drive, some PV systems have more safety features than others.

To protect technicians and installers, SolarEdge employs some of the world's strictest safety standards. The integrated SafeDC technology automatically de-energises DC cables to a touch-safe one volt whenever the inverter is turned off, complying with the strictest international standards and protecting PV professionals, firefighters and assets.

Inverter-embedded arc detection, installed in hundreds of thousands of monitored systems worldwide, accurately identifies specified arcs and shuts down the inverter to prevent fires. The optional auto-reconnect feature allows for continued safe production until the issue is resolved.

Safety meets convenience with module-level monitoring and remote troubleshooting, which eliminate diagnostic work at dangerous heights.

Best of all, SolarEdge safety is built into the system - no additional components or installation required. SafeDC, arc prevention, module-level monitoring and secure battery operation - that is how SolarEdge protects your team and your customers' investment.

Safety Features That Standard Inverters Simply Do Not Have

SolarEdge is the preferred choice of many leading UK insurance companies - and for good reason. When you switch off a standard inverter, the DC cables on your roof remain live at high voltage. That is a risk to you, your family, and any emergency services attending your property.

SolarEdge's SafeDC technology automatically reduces the DC voltage across all cables to a safe 1V the moment the inverter is switched off or loses grid power. The system cannot re-energise until deliberately restarted.

  • SafeDC automatic shutdown on every system
  • Embedded arc fault detection
  • Module-level fault monitoring catches problems early
  • Preferred by insurers and specified on new-build developments

HOW THE SOLAREDGE SYSTEM WORKS FOR YOUR HOME

The SolarEdge inverter system is built around one principle – every panel on your roof should perform at its maximum, every single day. Here is what sets it apart from a standard solar installation.

SolarEdge power optimisers delivering up to 25% more energy from the same roof - module-level optimisation means every panel works at full potential independently

SolarEdge – Module-Level Power Optimisation

With a SolarEdge system, every panel on your roof gets its own power optimiser. This means shading from a chimney, dormer window, or neighbouring tree no longer drags down the output of your entire system. Each panel works independently to produce the maximum possible energy from the sunlight it receives.

For homes with complex rooflines, multiple roof aspects, or partial shading at different times of day, this technology can increase total solar yield by 20 to 25% compared to a standard string inverter. More output means faster payback and greater savings on your energy bills.

SolarEdge Inverter Knowledge Centre

Everything you need to know about SolarEdge inverter systems, power optimisers, and what sets them apart - answered by our certified SolarEdge installers at Tile Energy.

A SolarEdge system combines a central HD-Wave inverter with a power optimiser fitted to every individual panel. Unlike a standard string inverter - where all panels are connected in series and the weakest panel limits everyone else - SolarEdge allows each panel to operate independently at its personal maximum. The result is more energy from the same roof, full visibility of what each panel is doing, and automatic safety shutdown of all DC cables the moment the system is switched off.
With a standard string inverter, all your panels are wired together. If one panel is shaded by a chimney, a dormer window, or a tree - even partially - the output of every panel on that string is dragged down to the level of the weakest one. SolarEdge breaks that dependency. Each panel has its own optimiser. One shaded panel stays shaded - but every other panel keeps producing at its peak. Over the lifetime of a system, this typically translates to 20-25% more energy generated.
SolarEdge was founded in 2006 in Israel and is now one of the world's leading solar technology companies - listed on the NASDAQ, operating in over 140 countries, with more than 4,000 employees and over 1,000 patents. They have shipped tens of millions of power optimisers globally and are consistently rated among the top solar inverter brands for residential and commercial installations. They are a technology-focused manufacturer, not a finance or aggregator company.
SolarEdge suits most UK homes but offers the greatest advantage where a standard inverter is weakest. It is ideal if your roof has any shading - from chimneys, dormer windows, satellite dishes, or nearby trees. It is also the right choice if your panels face more than one direction, are at different pitches, or are split across separate roof planes. For a simple, unshaded, south-facing roof it still performs well - but the premium over a standard inverter is harder to justify purely on output gains alone.
Yes. One of SolarEdge's key advantages is that it allows panels on completely different roof faces to be connected in a single string. South, east, west - even north-facing panels - can all be included. Each panel is optimised independently, so a north-facing panel that produces less will not drag down the output of the east-facing panels around it. This makes SolarEdge particularly well suited to UK homes with awkward or split-orientation roof layouts.
Both systems outperform a standard string inverter on any roof with shading or multiple roof faces, but they suit different priorities. SolarEdge uses a central inverter with a power optimiser on each panel - higher overall efficiency, better suited to battery integration, and typically lower upfront cost. Enphase places a microinverter behind every panel, eliminating the central inverter entirely - meaning no single point of failure, though any physical fault requires roof access to resolve. SolarEdge offers higher system efficiency and the most direct route to DC-coupled battery storage. Tile Energy installs SolarEdge because it suits the majority of UK roofs, delivers outstanding monitoring, and integrates most efficiently with battery storage. We will give you a straight recommendation based on your specific roof at the survey stage.
The power optimiser is a small DC-DC converter clipped to the back of each panel. It continuously tracks the maximum power point (MPPT) of its individual panel, independent of every other panel on the roof. It conditions the DC output before sending it to the central inverter - using Boost and Buck technology to maintain a fixed, stable string voltage regardless of what individual panels are doing. It also collects real-time performance data and transmits it to the mySolarEdge monitoring platform.
Boost and Buck refers to the ability of each optimiser to raise or lower the voltage of its panel's output before it reaches the central inverter. If a panel's voltage is too low - early morning, overcast conditions, or partial shading - the optimiser boosts it to the required level, meaning the system starts generating earlier and keeps generating later than a standard inverter would. If a panel's voltage is too high, the optimiser bucks it down, protecting the system and ensuring efficient conversion throughout the day.
Yes - a SolarEdge system requires an optimiser on every panel in the array. This is because the central HD-Wave inverter is designed to work with the fixed-voltage DC output that only the optimisers can provide. Without an optimiser, a panel cannot be included in the string. This means SolarEdge is a whole-system approach rather than a bolt-on upgrade - it is specified and installed as a complete unit from the outset.
Yes - this is one area where SolarEdge has a clear advantage over microinverters. Most microinverters have a power cap of around 380W per panel, meaning today's 400W, 430W, and 440W panels cannot operate at their full rated output. SolarEdge power optimisers pass the full DC output from each panel to the central inverter with no power cap, so your panels are never artificially limited. The HD-Wave inverter also supports up to 200% DC oversizing, maximising generation in the lower light conditions typical of UK winters.
No - SolarEdge power optimisers use a proprietary communication protocol and only work with SolarEdge inverters. This is an important consideration because it means your system is part of a closed ecosystem. If your central inverter ever needs replacing, it must be replaced with another SolarEdge model. The upside is that the tight integration between optimisers and inverter is what makes panel-level monitoring, SafeDC, and the performance guarantees possible. Tile Energy will always discuss this with you before specifying a system.
Yes, but there is one important consideration. Because SolarEdge uses a central inverter, any expansion must stay within that inverter's capacity. If you want to add significantly more panels, it may require upgrading to a larger inverter at the same time. The good news is that SolarEdge HD-Wave inverters support up to 200% DC oversizing, so there is typically headroom built into a well-specified system from the outset. Any additional panels will each need their own power optimiser. Tile Energy will design your initial system with future expansion in mind if you flag this at the survey stage - planning for extra panels from the beginning is far more cost-effective than retrofitting later.
SafeDC is SolarEdge's automatic safety feature built into every power optimiser. The moment the central inverter is switched off or loses grid power, SafeDC automatically reduces the voltage across all DC cables on your roof to a safe 1 volt. This happens without any manual action. A standard string inverter leaves DC cables live at potentially hundreds of volts even after shutdown - a real risk in the event of a fire or emergency service attendance. SafeDC is not optional on SolarEdge - it is standard on every system we install.
Yes - significantly. Standard string inverter systems leave high-voltage DC cables running across your roof for the life of the system. These remain live whenever there is daylight, even with the inverter switched off. SolarEdge's SafeDC eliminates this risk at shutdown. In addition, SolarEdge inverters include built-in arc fault detection that identifies potential fault currents and shuts the system down automatically - preventing fires before they can start. This combination of features is why SolarEdge is often specified by insurers and on residential developments.
Not at all. SafeDC operates entirely in the background and has no effect on generation or performance during normal operation. You will never notice it is there during day-to-day use. It only activates in a shutdown event - either manually when you switch the system off, or automatically in the event of a grid outage or fault. The system re-energises automatically when grid power is restored or the inverter is manually restarted.
Arc fault detection is a built-in feature of SolarEdge inverters that continuously monitors the DC circuit for abnormal current patterns that could indicate a wiring fault or arc. Arcing in DC cables is a known fire risk in solar installations. If an arc is detected, the inverter shuts down automatically to prevent escalation. An optional auto-reconnect feature allows the system to resume normal operation once the fault is resolved, without requiring a manual restart. No separate arc fault protection device is needed.
The mySolarEdge app gives you a real-time dashboard showing: live output from every individual panel, total system generation, household consumption, grid import and export, and battery status if you have storage installed. You can view data by day, week, month, year, or system lifetime. An energy balance section shows how much of your solar you are self-consuming versus exporting. If you have an EV charger, heat pump, or other smart device connected, their individual consumption is also shown.
Yes - completely free for the lifetime of your system. There are no monthly fees, no subscription tiers, and no features locked behind a paywall. The app is available on iOS and Android. Unlike some monitoring platforms that charge for historical data access or advanced analytics, mySolarEdge provides full panel-level data and lifetime system history at no cost. This is part of what makes SolarEdge exceptional value relative to other monitoring solutions.
Yes. As a SolarEdge Trusted Installer, Tile Energy has access to the SolarEdge monitoring platform and can view your system's performance data remotely - with your consent. This means if you raise a support query, our team can check individual panel outputs, inverter status, and fault codes before deciding whether a site visit is needed. In many cases we can identify and resolve issues remotely without attending your property. Our in-house support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
A standard string inverter gives you one number - total system output. You can see how much your whole array generated, but nothing more. If a single panel develops a fault, gets partially shaded, or is covered in debris, you have no way of knowing which panel is the problem - or even that there is a problem until you notice a drop in your energy bill weeks later. SolarEdge's panel-level monitoring means faults are visible immediately, enabling faster diagnosis and less energy lost to undetected underperformance.
No. SolarEdge monitoring is built directly into the HD-Wave central inverter. This is a key advantage over microinverter systems, which require a separate gateway hub to collect and transmit panel data - a hub that typically carries only a 5-year warranty. With SolarEdge, there is no additional component to fail, no separate device to power or maintain, and no gateway replacement cost mid-system.
The LED on your SolarEdge inverter shows the system's current status at a glance. A solid blue light means the inverter is connected to the monitoring server and communicating normally. A blinking green light means the system is generating power - the faster the blink, the higher the output. A solid green light means the system is producing power but is not currently sending data to the monitoring server. A red light indicates a fault that needs attention - your mySolarEdge app will show an alert with more detail. If there are no lights at all, check that the inverter has power at the isolator switch. Tile Energy's support team can read your system's status remotely, so if you see an unexpected light and are unsure what it means, call us Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Yes. SolarEdge systems support two battery options. The SolarEdge Home Battery connects DC-coupled directly to a compatible SolarEdge Home Hub inverter - this is the most efficient route and provides fully integrated monitoring in the mySolarEdge app. The Tesla Powerwall 3 can also be added to a SolarEdge system via AC-coupling - slightly less efficient than DC-coupling, but works well and gives you the full Tesla app experience. Tile Energy installs both batteries alongside SolarEdge systems. We will advise which is the better fit for your setup at the survey stage.
The SolarEdge Home Battery is a 9.7 kWh DC-coupled lithium-ion storage unit that integrates directly with a SolarEdge Home Hub inverter. Because it is DC-coupled, solar energy flows directly into the battery without an extra conversion stage - making it more efficient than an AC-coupled battery. Up to three units can be installed per inverter, giving up to 29.1 kWh of storage. It carries a 10-year warranty and gives full visibility of battery charge, discharge, and state of health through the mySolarEdge app. Compare with the Tesla Powerwall 3.
Yes - a Tesla Powerwall 3 can be installed alongside an existing SolarEdge system via AC-coupling. This works well and is a popular combination, particularly for customers who already have a SolarEdge system and want to add storage later. The Powerwall manages its own monitoring through the Tesla app, while the mySolarEdge app continues to show solar panel-level data. For new installations, if you are planning to add a battery from the outset, the SolarEdge Home Battery via DC-coupling is more efficient. Tile Energy will explain both options at your free survey. Learn more about the Tesla Powerwall 3.
With DC-coupled storage (SolarEdge Home Battery), solar energy flows directly from your panels into the battery as DC current - only converting to AC once, when you use it in your home. This minimises energy loss during conversion. With AC-coupled storage (Tesla Powerwall), solar energy is converted from DC to AC by the inverter, then converted back to DC to store in the battery, then converted to AC again when you use it. Each conversion loses a small percentage of energy. In practice the difference is a few percent, but DC-coupled is always the more efficient route for a new integrated system.
If you are planning to add the SolarEdge Home Battery, it is better to install it at the same time or specify a compatible Home Hub inverter from the outset - this ensures the DC-coupling is possible and the system is correctly sized. If you are planning to add a Tesla Powerwall 3, it can be added at any time as it connects via AC-coupling. Both options qualify for 0% VAT when installed with solar panels. Adding a battery at the same time as your solar typically reduces overall labour cost compared to a separate return visit.
Yes - and this is one of the fastest-growing reasons homeowners choose SolarEdge. The SolarEdge ecosystem includes a dedicated EV charger that connects directly with your inverter, allowing the system to automatically divert surplus solar generation to charge your car first, before exporting any excess to the grid. This means your car charges on solar electricity rather than drawing from the grid at full rate. Charging priorities, schedules, and targets are all managed through the mySolarEdge app. SolarEdge can also integrate with a number of third-party smart chargers if you already have one installed. For customers combining solar, battery storage, and an electric vehicle, a SolarEdge system offers the most joined-up approach to managing all three in one connected ecosystem.
A complete SolarEdge system typically costs £1,200 to £1,500 more than an equivalent system with a standard string inverter. This covers the HD-Wave central inverter and a power optimiser on every panel. 0% VAT applies to the entire installation for residential properties. For roofs with any shading or multi-orientation panels, the additional energy yield over the system's lifetime frequently exceeds the upfront premium within 3-5 years. For simple, unshaded roofs the business case is less clear-cut, and Tile Energy will always give you an honest view at the survey stage.
For the majority of UK roofs - yes. Most UK homes have some degree of shading, panels on more than one roof face, or rooftop obstructions. In these situations, a standard string inverter can lose 15-25% of potential output. SolarEdge recovers most of that lost generation through per-panel MPPT and Boost/Buck technology. Added to this are the monitoring benefits, the SafeDC safety advantage, and the significantly longer warranty. Where the calculation is less certain is on a perfectly unshaded, single-face south-facing roof - but even then, the panel-level monitoring alone is valuable for long-term system health.
0% VAT applies to all residential SolarEdge solar and battery installations in the UK. This is confirmed until at least 31 March 2027 under HMRC Notice 708/6 and is expected to be extended. The zero rate covers panels, inverter, power optimisers, battery storage if included, mounting hardware, and labour - the full installed cost. This saves typically £800 to £1,500 compared to standard-rated work, making it one of the most meaningful government incentives currently available for home energy improvements.
Yes. Because Tile Energy is MCS certified, every SolarEdge installation we complete qualifies you for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This requires energy suppliers to pay you for every unit of solar electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary - Octopus Energy currently offers among the best rates in the UK. With a SolarEdge system's higher generation output, there is typically more surplus to export, meaning higher SEG earnings compared to a standard string inverter on the same roof.
For a SolarEdge solar-only system, payback is typically 7-10 years in the South and Midlands of England, based on 2026 electricity prices and SEG export income. Adding battery storage extends the upfront cost but also extends annual savings - combined solar and battery payback is typically 8-12 years depending on tariff and usage. On roofs where SolarEdge significantly outperforms a standard inverter, the payback period is shorter because higher annual generation means faster bill reduction and more SEG income.
Evidence increasingly suggests that solar installations add value for buyers, and a SolarEdge system is easier to sell on than a basic string inverter setup. When a prospective buyer's surveyor inspects the property, being able to show a named premium system with verifiable monitoring data and strong warranty cover is a meaningful advantage. The mySolarEdge app provides a full generation record going back to day one - tangible proof of a well-performing system. Some mortgage lenders and energy performance assessors also look more favourably on systems from established manufacturers. Tile Energy registers all warranties in your name at installation, so the paperwork is clean and transferable if you ever sell.
SolarEdge power optimisers carry a 25-year product warranty as standard - matching the expected lifespan of the solar panels they are clipped to. The HD-Wave central inverter carries a 12-year warranty as standard, which can be extended to 20 or 25 years. This is significantly stronger than a standard string inverter, which typically carries only 5-10 years. All warranties are registered by Tile Energy as part of your installation. You do not need to contact SolarEdge directly at any point.
SolarEdge offers warranty extension options at the time of installation. Extension to 20 years or 25 years is available for an additional cost, added at commissioning. Tile Energy will present these options at the quote stage. Extending the warranty makes strong financial sense given the cost of inverter replacement (typically £800-£1,500 plus labour) - locking in coverage to 20 or 25 years removes this cost uncertainty for the life of your system.
The central HD-Wave inverter is wall-mounted inside your garage or utility room - easily accessible without roof work. If it fails within warranty, SolarEdge issues a replacement unit and Tile Energy handles the swap. The existing optimisers on your panels remain in place and are reconnected to the new inverter. Because it must be replaced with another SolarEdge model (due to the proprietary optimiser protocol), Tile Energy will manage the sourcing and installation as part of your ongoing support relationship.
An optimiser failure affects only the one panel it is connected to - the rest of the system continues operating normally. Because mySolarEdge monitors every panel individually, a failed optimiser shows up immediately in the app, so you will know exactly which panel and which optimiser is affected. Tile Energy's support team can diagnose this remotely. Replacement optimisers are straightforward to fit and are covered by the 25-year product warranty. In most cases a single optimiser fault is resolved without a lengthy site visit.
No annual servicing is required. SolarEdge systems have no moving parts and are designed to operate without routine maintenance. The mySolarEdge monitoring platform alerts you to any performance anomalies automatically. Industry guidance suggests a visual inspection every few years and panel cleaning every 2-3 years (or sooner in areas with heavy soiling from birds or pollution). Tile Energy's in-house support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, for any queries that arise during the life of your system.
This is an important question and one worth asking before you choose any installer. SolarEdge product warranties are held directly with SolarEdge and are not dependent on your original installer remaining in business. If your installer closes, your optimiser and inverter warranties remain fully valid and can be transferred to another SolarEdge Trusted Installer. Tile Energy regularly supports customers whose previous installer has ceased trading - we can take over monitoring access, ongoing support, and warranty claims on your behalf. Tile Energy has been installing solar since 2019 with an in-house support team available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
SolarEdge requires Trusted Installer status to maintain your full product warranties and ensure the system is commissioned correctly on SolarEdge's servers. Trusted Installers are assessed and authorised directly by SolarEdge, meaning their engineers are trained on the full product range, system design tools, and commissioning process. Using an uncertified installer risks voiding your warranty and leaves you without the manufacturer's warranty support. Tile Energy is a SolarEdge Trusted Installer - we handle all registration, commissioning, and warranty documentation for you.
A standard residential SolarEdge solar installation takes 1-2 days. Tile Energy handles the complete process - free survey, system design, DNO notification, installation, commissioning on SolarEdge's platform, and mySolarEdge app setup. Adding a battery on the same visit typically adds only a few hours. You do not need to manage any paperwork or contact SolarEdge directly at any point - we take care of everything from initial quote to post-installation support.
Most standard SolarEdge residential systems fall under G98 regulations, requiring notification to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) rather than formal approval. Larger systems (typically above 3.68kW output) require a G99 application with prior approval. Tile Energy manages all DNO notifications and applications on your behalf as part of the standard installation process. G99 approval typically takes a few weeks - we factor this into your installation timeline from the outset so there are no surprises.
Tile Energy is a SolarEdge Trusted Installer and MCS certified installer - both required for a complete, warranty-valid, SEG-eligible installation. We have been installing SolarEdge systems since 2019 and have completed over 2,000 solar and battery installations across the UK. We are also a Tesla Premium Certified Installer for Powerwall 3 systems. Our in-house support team is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, for monitoring queries, app setup, and post-installation support.

Yes. SolarEdge is well suited to both flat roof and commercial installations. On flat roofs, panels are mounted on angled frames to optimise solar capture, and SolarEdge's per-panel optimisation means panels at slightly varying angles still operate at their individual peak rather than being dragged down by each other. For commercial buildings, SolarEdge offers three-phase inverters capable of handling much larger systems than residential single-phase units, with the same panel-level monitoring and SafeDC safety features throughout. Tile Energy carries out commercial SolarEdge installations nationally - whether it is a warehouse, office building, agricultural unit, or flat-roof residential property, our team will assess the site, design a system around your actual energy usage, and manage the full installation and commissioning process from start to finish.
