Your solar panels connect directly into the Powerwall 3's built-in inverter. During the day it stores surplus solar energy. In the evening it automatically discharges to power your home rather than drawing from the grid. The Expansion Pack is a DC-coupled battery module that adds 13.5 kWh of storage to your existing Powerwall 3. Unlike a second full Powerwall unit, it has no inverter of its own - it connects directly to your Powerwall 3's inverter and Gateway, making it a much more cost-effective way to increase capacity.
Expansion Packs are typically priced at around £4,700-£4,950 fully installed. That works out at approximately £385 per kWh of storage - the lowest cost per kWh on the UK home battery market. It also qualifies for the same £375 Tesla cashback rebate as the main Powerwall unit.

Yes. The Powerwall 3 can be installed in AC-coupled mode alongside an existing solar system with its own inverter - you do not need to replace your existing inverter. For new installations or full system replacements, DC-coupled mode (solar connected directly into the Powerwall) is more efficient. Tile Energy will assess your existing setup and recommend the best configuration.
The Powerwall 3 uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry. This is a significant upgrade from the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cells used in earlier Powerwalls. LFP batteries offer longer cycle life, better thermal stability, and improved safety - they are far less prone to overheating and have a more stable discharge curve across their lifespan.
Tesla warranties the Powerwall 3 for 10 years with a 70% capacity retention guarantee. In practice, lithium batteries of this type typically last 15-20 years in residential use. Capacity degrades at around 2% per year - after 10 years you should still have around 80% of original capacity. There are no annual maintenance costs or service charges.

Tesla Electric is Tesla's own retail electricity tariff - the same model already running in Texas in the United States. On 11 March 2026, Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures Limited a full retail electricity supply licence for England, Scotland and Wales. Tesla can now sell electricity directly to UK homes and businesses, competing alongside British Gas, EDF and Octopus Energy. A consumer launch is expected later in 2026.
No - Tesla Electric will be open to any UK household, just as it is in Texas. You do not need a Tesla vehicle, a Powerwall, or any Tesla hardware at all to join. However, the more Tesla products you have, the greater the financial benefit. Powerwall owners in particular stand to gain the most through smart tariff automation and Virtual Power Plant income.
Based on the Texas model, Tesla Electric UK is expected to offer dynamic, real-time pricing managed automatically by Tesla's Autobidder AI software - buying cheap electricity for your Powerwall when grid prices are low and selling or discharging when prices are high. Likely options include a Fixed Plan (guaranteed monthly VPP credits) and a Dynamic Plan (higher earning potential based on real-time grid conditions). No UK pricing has been confirmed yet.

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) links thousands of individual Powerwall home batteries through software so they can act together as one large power resource for the National Grid. When electricity demand spikes - a cold winter evening with everyone home and the heating on - instead of firing up an expensive gas peaker plant, the grid draws a small amount of stored energy from thousands of participating homes simultaneously.
